Kristi Dances and Then Talks

Olympic gold medalist and Asian American icon Kristi Yamaguchi takes to the dance floor for the first time tonight on "Dancing with the Stars." Expectations are high, can she deliver?

I'm looking forward to it. Yes, I'm a DWTS junkie. And it makes sense. It's feel-good fun in a time when business is anything but.

But best of all, I'll be chatting with Kristi later this week to sum up her feelings on Week One and the DWTS craze. Have questions I should ask? Email me at editor@eastwestmagazine.com.

And stay tuned for our interview later this week...

Support the Growth...

The company that delivers East West turns five this May. It is a milestone event for our small, niche, shoestring operation, and we sincerely hope to have many more milestones in the years to come.
But, and there is always a but when you strive to serve a demographic that corporate America's marketers are still unsure of, we need your support to carry forward.
National advertisers are coming along. I've seen significant improvement in thier understanding of the East West reader since we first launched as a Web magazine in 2003.
But still, advertisers can't support this mission entirely, not yet at least. So we rely on the support of our readers. On you!
Through subscriptions over the years, and now, in time for the 5th birthday, through our Birthday Club Life Membership.
We NEED your support to prove that APA media is needed. Don't let another outlet fade away. Support your media in our mission to serve you. This has been a labor of love that we hope grows stronger, bigger and lasts another 5 years and beyond.

We Were MIA

I'm back!

It has been a quiet few months here at East West, and it is time for us to explain and get back to what we do best.

First off, I thank all of our readers for enduring our silence over the last two months. The magazine has gone through a bit of restructuring and during the process, we felt it was best to take a step back and assess. We needed a clear picture of what was to be before we could fill you in. So thank you for your patience.

But we are back now and ready for an exciting 2008! The East West brand originated as a Web site back in May 2003....yes, it's our fifth year of bringing you a seamless fusion of culture, food, art and everyday life. Can you believe that? Five! And in a time when Asian media and the market overall continues to struggle, we only had one hiatus, only missed one issue, in five years! Kudos to us. :-)

The April/May issue is coming soon and there will still be 6 issues this year. We are planning something new for over the holidays. So stayed tuned. Oh and yes, the 5th annual Face contest is almost here. Stay tuned next week for more details. But I can say, we'll start taking entries March 1st. So get your photo on and get ready. Good luck.

Looking Ahead

Each year East West editors and staff literally smash together our collective knowledge of popular culture, industry, sports, politics and world events and wait for the result to emerge: our annual list of ten to watch in the coming year. This year's, or shall I say next year's, 10 to Watch List is here.

As always, it was hard to limit the list to just ten, as there are many more individuals on the radar. And one particular discussion from earlier in December, as we finalized the list (which was officially announced on December 11th), is now somewhat haunting. We discussed whether or not it would be appropriate to add Pakistan to the list. While not a person, we felt the country itself should be noted as a nation that would somehow impact our world in 2008 and years to come. In the end, we chose to stick to the individual (or character) nature of the list. So Pakistan wasn't included.
Perhaps now Benazir Bhutto's legacy will be what we are watching in 2008...

On a happier note, I predict that East/West individuals will soar to even greater heights in 2008, so much so that we might have to expand our list to 20 or 30 or event 40 to watch for 2009. And what about us? Well, we hope you'll be watching us as well. As East West media turns 5 in May.

Happy New Year from everyone at East West!

Hapa Only?

Latoya Peterson included us in a recent blog post for Racialicious, a blog about the intersection of race and pop culture, and the resulting comment thread proved to be quite interesting.

A snippet from Peterson's writeup - "While I enjoy reading magazines, they tend to be a POC wasteland. With the exceptions of specialty publications like Essence or East West, there is not a lot of minority representation." She goes on to point out articles she enjoyed in recent magazines, including our current Dec/Jan issue.

A reader as a result checked out our website and had this reaction, which she posted on the blog, "I looked around the East West magazine website, and I was starting to wonder what they meant when they said that they’re an Asian-American magazine…were they referring to hapas (half Asian)? Of course, they have to be represented too, but ALL the models/people who are featured on there are hapa..."

Really? They are? Other posts from various individuals pointed out that this was not the case, but Latoya also asked me to comment on the question/observation. It was something that really gave me pause. But by recalling our mission, I was able to respond, and I felt the message in that response would be worthwhile to share here as well. A part of it is below.

But to read the original post and the entire comment thread ( quite interesting if you have a few minutes) click here.

My response:
"There is a mix and that is what makes us unique, we are inclusive not exclusive. Carrie Ann Inaba is hapa, but her Japanese and Chinese roots are compelling, her time in Japan as a pop star is compelling, etc. Previous covers have included Ming Na, Lucy Liu and more… Our Wasabi Woman, not hapa. I, myself, am full Indian American. The list goes on and on so that is why the comment surprised me.
Many of the My East West stories are from hapa women, but again not all are and some aren’t even Asian at all, but they each have a unique East/West perspective, and that is the nature of that particular department.
The point: it doesn’t matter. We don’t look at content production from a hapa or not hapa perspective nor do we try to balance it. We do what makes most sense, what makes a story that needs to be told, such as Asian Americans and hepatitis b, or diabetes or depression, and so it varies. We are inclusive. We are truly pan Asian American and proud that we celebrate each individual’s unique Asian cultural experience no matter how you breakdown his or her ethnic makeup. We can each learn from another and underneath it all the East/West cultural experiences are often quite similar."

Sexiest Men

OK, I feel I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the annual drool fest that is People's Sexiest Man Alive issue. Sure, it certainly isn't painful for me to peruse the list, but this isn't all fun and games people! There actually is a story here. :-)

And no, it isn't that Matt Damon took the top honor although I am a big fan and quite pleased with the choice. (Go Bourne!)
The story here is that AA men are once again helping to prove Asian sexiness.
Will Yun Lee from the new NBC show "Bionic Woman" makes the cut. And check out People's 100 Sexy Men in 1 Minute video to see if you can spot some other community folk.
Plus, there is a homage to Masi Oka's geek sex appeal.

But, if you need more substance, well then check out Salon's take on the annual list. They've got "26 more men that, sure, are easy on the eyes, but who also unleash complicated emotions in us that we just have never been able to articulate. Until now."
Actor Tony Leung makes this intriguing list that pairs looks with smarts, talent, ambition, and do-gooders.

Who are our picks for the perfect mix? There are so many, but here's ten of the moment...in no particular order.

1. Will Yun Lee (we agree)
2. Kunal Nayyar
3. Kal Penn
4. Sendhil Ramamurthy
5. John Abraham
6. Daniel Dae Kim
7. Justin Lin
8. John Cho
9. Alec Mapa
10. Sunkrish Bala
